THE GIANT PERIWINKLE
“Of all the places I have ever known, that magnificent stretch of coast takes pride of place. My most endearing memories are of a pristine shore at spring low tide on a still morning; of rock pools and black oyster catchers; of clusters of red bait, alikreukels and venus ears; of red rock crabs and perhaps, an octopus tentacle feeling for prey among the sea anemones…” – M Diemont: The Confiscated Coast
Nestled against Perdekop on the outskirts of Baardskeedersbos, a stone’s throw from Elim in the South Cape wine district, sits the home of The Giant Periwinkle wines.
We have built our boutique winery on love – of good wine.
BEHIND THE NAME
Winemaker Pierre Rabie came up with the name while diving off the Cape Agulhas coast near Suiderstrand. What he saw under water and the whimsical English for the alikreukel, a large edible sea snail, gave rise to The Giant Periwinkle name.
Combining respect for the art of winemaking, a love for the countryside, and a desire to keep on learning, brought the wine farm dream to fruition.
Our wine is true to the terroir and surrounds of the beloved area it is grown from, each one with individual characteristics and personalities, adding a little extra to the flavour of life.
